Background to the Busherian Mountaineers Group Fund

The idea that gave birth to the ‘Busherian Mountaineers Group’ (‘BMG’) was born sometime in 2015. A group of old boys of the Alliance High School, Kikuyu (‘AHS’) coalesced around the idea of using a shared passion: mountain climbing, to raise awareness and funds for their beloved alma mater’s endowment fund. The old boys, were:

  • Shem Yator (Class of ‘90)
  • Erastus Ngatia (Class of ’92)
  • Kenneth Muchina (Class of ’94)
  • Edward Matekwa (Class of ’95)
  • Karanu Waweru (Class of ’98)
  • George Njatha (Class of ’98); and
  • Peter Muia (Class of 2003).

By the time the AHS’s 90th Founders’ Day was marked on 6th March 2016, the members of the BMG had already committed themselves to raising money for an endowment.

BMG went on ahead to climb Mt. Kenya, to Lenana Point on 22nd April 2016 and Mt. Kilimanjaro to Uhuru Peak on 22nd September 2016 under the Mountain Challenge banner.

The Mountain Challenge raised KShs 2,011,908 in cash from over 200 benefactors – old boys and friends.

That money under the stewardship of the Alliance High School Endowment Fund Trust, and income from the capital invested is applied towards scholarships.

Honouring a legend, educating future leaders

On 6 October 2018, the family of the late Hon. Kenneth S.N. Matiba, an AHS alumnus agreed to a request by the AHS alumni community to name some scholarships funded by the BMG Fund’s endowment after Hon. Matiba. The late Hon Matiba is widely well regarded in Kenya for his service and achievements in the political sphere and private enterprise.

Thus was born the KSN-Matiba – BMG Scholarships. These scholarships are awarded to boys with a demonstrated need for financial assistance, but who above and beyond that, are involved in sports, in community support/volunteering and in leadership in any facets of school life where they can lead.

We are keen on working with our friends and supporters to raise more funds for the underlying endowment to allow us to honour the name of one of AHS’ most remarkable alumni by inspiring the lives of, and facilitating the education of youth that we hope will give Kenya and the world future leaders.
